Types of Diseases – A Broad Ayurvedic Classification
Nijaagantu vibhagena tatra roga: dvidha smritha: tesham kaya mano bhedat adhistanampi dwidha
– Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana, Chapter 1, Verse 21
This verse classifies diseases into two broad categories – Nija and Agantu. Nija Rogas, originating within the body, results from an imbalance of internal factors, primarily the doshas. On the other hand, Agantu Rogas stem from external factors that disrupt the essential balance of the doshas.
Ayurveda emphasises the significance of Ahara (food) and Vihara (lifestyle) in maintaining the equilibrium of doshas. When these elements are mismanaged, Nija Rogas emerge, affecting both the mind and body. Nija Roga, the internal ailments, manifests when the doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – become deranged due to faulty lifestyle choices and improper dietary habits.
Contrarily, Agantu Roga, originating from external factors, encompasses diseases caused by injuries, the effect of poisons and toxins, and other such external influences. These external disturbances create an imbalance in the doshas, leading to the manifestation of various health issues.
Furthermore, diseases are categorised based on where they manifest – Kaya (body) or Manas (mind). This dual classification highlights the connection between mental and physical well-being in Ayurveda. Both Nija and Agantu can impact the body and mind. However, the soul remains untouched by diseases.
To comprehend the root causes of Nija and Agantu diseases, one must look at the intricacies of Ayurvedic principles. To prevent Nija Rogas, one must adopt a healthy and timely approach to diet and daily routines. Agantu Rogas can be avoided to an extent by staying present and vigilant in our day-to-day lives.
These classifications help identify the root cause of diseases and thereby treat them effectively.
